Sightseeing Latisana

Mappa di Latisana del 1746

Located in the left river bank of the final part of Tagliamento River at the border between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto, is located Latisana, which is characterized by its deeply Friulian nature even if it has strong Venetian features deriving from the long domination of the Venetian Republic.
Still today it is possible to sight on ancient palaces of the historical centre the coat of arms of old Venetian houses and families like the Vendramins' whose name was given to one of the main roads of the town.
The beauty of Latisana is due to its geographical position: the town is located at the half way between the Lagoon of Venice and Trieste and Tagliamento River , which in the Roman age was the main road of navigation and trade (“Litoranea Veneta”) after the famous Via Annia ,flowsLitoranea Veneta - Bevazzana through it.
The town had long been an important fluvial harbour; today it has proved to be the most important international touristic crossroads in the western part of Friuli Venezia Giulia, thanks to the connections with the main modern ways of transport and to the nearness with the seaside resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro (it is only 15 Km far from here).
Tagliamento - PertegadaBesides the artistic heritage of monuments and places of cult (one example is the cathedral holding the altar piece “The Baptism of Jesus Christ” by Paolo Cagliari, known as Veronese), there are other important centres of touristic and cultural attraction: the Parrots Park and Research centre, the only single-theme park dedicated to them www.parcodeipappagalli.com;  the basins of Aprilia Marittima with 2.500 mooring places, shipyards and exclusive services for boats; and last but not least bike trips through secondary, quite roads which allow visitor enjoying perfums of the land and colours of the vegetation. bicicletta

Just through these roads people can leave from Latisana by bike and easily reach the beach, maybe doing a little break at one of the many farms situated along the way. The producers will be happy to welcome guests with a glass of wine, a slice of cheese or home-made salame.

Latisana is the mother of the wine called "Friuli Latisana", recognized as D.O.C. wine (Denomination of controlled origin). Its 370-hectares production area divided among 12 towns (Latisana is included) has been renowned since XV° when Doge Andrea Vendramin's son, Bartolomeo, coming to live in the feud of Latisana, created an esteemed breeding of horses and gave birth to coltivations including wine production. This is the reason why the friulian wine of "Tisane" spreaded to Venice and kept an "excellent reputation" in the capital of the Venetian Serenissima Republic. Latisana's wine is also called "Vendrameno wine", deriving its name from the Vendramins family, venetian patricial owners. The D.O.C. “FRIULI LATISANA” was born in 1975 while one year later, in 1976, the volunteer association for the protection of the name was formed (see www.docfriulilatisana.com).

Piazza Caduti della Julia - LatisanaBecause of these reasons, Latisana put itself up as an exceptionally welcoming system for the tourist of taste, with a lot of joyful appointments each month and a lot of proposals of accomodations, from holiday farmhouses with many good qualities to family business small hotels.
