Villa de Asarta Kechler
Fraforeano - Ronchis

The luxuriant garden (three hectares behind the sixteenth century villa covered by wisteria) was planned by Giuseppe Jappelli, famous landscape gardener who in the middle of the XIX century came to Friuli to design both a park on the banks of the river Stella (it doesn't exist any longer) and this one, created on the banks of the river Tagliamento whose water, through a canal, form the central lake, full of oxbows with a lot of plants. It is an usual design for the Friulian tradition, in which the gardens, called "braide" were usually extensions of the house and people used to use them to enjoy the vegetation or to cultivate vegetables.
Penetrating into the garden full of ancient big trees (ginko biloba, cedrus atlantica, magnolia grandiflora, populus alba, ippocastani, tuje ...) you come across a grotto and an enchanting bamboo grove, wide lawns and a thick grove, which emphasizes the most important plants and the view of the lake.

Villa de Asarta Kechler is in Fraforeano di Ronchis (UD), 4 Km far from the exit Latisana/Lignano of the motorway A4 Venezia-Trieste.

Curiosity: the father of the Count Alessandro, Count Alberto called Titti, is the far-seeing hunter who foreshadowed the success of the area from Fraforeano to Lignano as a touristic pole. Kechler consults with his talented friend Marcello d'Olivo, and the latter designs a circular plan with lower houses sheltered by a pine-wood, in which each plot has the same distance from the sea. In 1954 Ernest Hemingway is at Villa de Asarta too, and writes: "this place will be the Italian Florida". Lignano Pineta will be constructed and it won't change its original shape until the 60es.

The Marano Lagoon

The Marano Lagoon is behind Lignano Sabbiadoro, where earth and water – the fresh one of the rivers (Stella, Turgnano, Cormor, Zellina, Corno, Ausa, Natissa, Tiel) and the salt one of the sea – mix in an intricate system of canals and oxbows. The lagoon is 7.300 hectares wide and goes from the outpouring of the river Tagliamento to the hatch of Porto Buso (it is the border between the Marano and Grado lagoons) and it is a piece of heaven for a lot of sea creatures but also for the numerous birds coming from North or Central Europe. Therefore it is inhabited by a huge number of birds belonging to several species, from the common to the rarest ones, and it is well equipped for those who enjoy bird watching. Considering the beauty of the territory two natural reserves were created in 1996 inside the lagoon: the first is on the outpouring of the river Stella (already declared "Oasis of faunal hold" in 1976 and recorded among the humid areas protected by the Ramsar Convention) and includes the whole delta of the same river; the second one comprises Valle Canal Novo and a 35-hectare fishing valley. The aim of the two reserves is the preservation of the unique and marvellous landscape of the lagoon.
